West Ouachita slips by Patriots

The Franklin Parish Patriots (0-7, 0-3 district 2-4A) and West Ouachita Chiefs battled every step of the way Friday night at Patriots Stadium. In the end, the Chiefs ran out with victory, 42-36.

West Ouachita quarterback Matt Calhoun ran for three touchdowns and 71 yards on 16 carries to lead the Chiefs to their fourth straight win.

"We executed and got several good runs and blocks," West Ouachita head coach Mitch Thomas said. "We had success defensively in the third quarter, especially with a couple of critical plays that our guys made happen."

While the Chiefs made plays on both sides of the ball, Calhoun's decision-making on the option-read after halftime was one deciding factor in a West Ouachita victory.

"(Quarterback Matt Calhoun) just killed us in the second half," Patriots head coach Barry Sebren said. "We were keying on the dive up the middle and they pulled the quarterback on us."

It was a see-saw battle most of the night. The Patriots played some inspired football and that had a lot to do with the solid play of running back Adrian Gardner. Running back Billy Minnifield again led the Chiefs in rushing yards with 147 yards and two touchdowns on 19 carries.

Gardner started the scoring early on with a 13-yard touchdown run. He added his second and final touchdown of the half on a run just before halftime from 30-yards out.

The two teams went to the lockers tied-up, 14-14. Gardner diced through the West Ouachita defense for 228 yards and four touchdowns.

A costly fumble late in the third quarter was also a deciding factor in the Chiefs leaving Winnsboro with a victory.
