Story Archives: River Oaks playing for keeps now

River Oaks playing for keeps now
by Cody Futrell - posted E-mail Story E-mail Story | Print Story Print Story
The River Oaks Mustangs go into this Friday night against Prairie View Academy with one thing on their mind: playoffs or bust.

"We have to win this game to make the playoffs," River Oaks head coach Robert Hannah said. "That was our goal to start the season and we have to beat Prairie View to do it."

River Oaks (6-3) will again be battling a team with considerable size. The Spartans (2-6) have outrun many this year because of a bruising offensive line making all the difference.

"They are solid up front," Hannah said. "They can run the football and make plays in so many ways. Our defense must have great gameplay and execute."

Prairie View quarterback Hunter Smith and running back Will Spires have been inspiring for the Spartans despite the lackadaisical record this season.

Both players had a touchdown run in each of the last few Prairie View contests, including one each during a shocking loss to Adams County Christian last week.

Quarterback Cody Trichell and running back Vincent Moore have created their own solid duo in the Mustangs backfield. Only a couple of mishaps have kept River Oaks from wrapping up a Class AA playoff spot for the first time in two seasons.

Trichell had 89 yards rushing in the loss to Trinity Episcopal last week. A hard-hitting Trinity team put a wall up against the Mustangs in the run game in the second half.

That fact is something Hannah says his team must overcome in this important rivalry game Friday night.
