West Monroe looks to contain Ruston rushing attack

After a dominating performance at homecoming last week, the West Monroe Rebels will look to find some fire when a talented Ruston team comes to Rebel Stadium Friday night.

"It has been like 'Ho-Hum,' the Rebels are playing," West Monroe head coach Don Shows said of the fan presence so far this season. "We will need every fan and every player into this one. Ruston is a very talented football team."

While the passion in the crowd has seemed to die this season, the Rebels' winning streak has not. West Monroe (7-0, 6-0 in district 1-5A) has dominated with an exciting offense and smothering defense through six district games.

Ruston (5-2, 4-2 ) has been up and down lately after beginning the season with four consecutive victories.

"They had some tough games against Byrd and Ouachita," Shows said. "They have an outstanding defense and offense."

Indeed, Ruston yielded a combined 23 points in the two district losses. The offense was slowed by penalties and turnovers in the losses, something West Monroe hopes to force upon Ruston again Friday.

The Rebels have had an intense week of practice as a game that could very well decide the district championship kicks off Friday night at 7 p.m.

"We have practiced hard," Shows said. "(Ruston) has great skill players and a loot of big, strong kids. I hope we can match up with them."

Ruston quarterback Nick Rome was forced into bad throw after bad throw in two losses to West Monroe last season, the second of which came in the opening round of the Louisiana High School Athletic Association playoffs. However, the signal caller has impressed coaches with his decision making now as a senior.

West Monroe will be working to contain Rome and the Ruston rushing attack in this Friday's 7 p.m. game.
