Story Archives: Ouachita tunes up for Captain Shreve

Ouachita tunes up for Captain Shreve
by Cody Futrell - posted E-mail Story E-mail Story | Print Story Print Story
After running over Natchitoches Central in another key district 1-5A game, the Ouachita Lions stay in district play Friday with a visit from the Captain Shreve Gators (2-3).

Ouachita (5-2) played most of the last week without running back Montrell Conner who has been slowed by a rib injury.

While it is not clear if Conner will play this week, Ouachita fans saw that the Lions have others stepping in, such as quarterback Corey Treadway with three touchdowns last week.

"We played well on offense," Ouachita head coach John Carr said. "We did not do everything we wanted to do. Captain Shreve is going to test us with their offense, too."

The Gators again bring a vaunted passing attack to Monroe this week. Captain Shreve is averaging 30.4 points per game.

"They like to spread you out as a defense," Carr said. "They will throw the ball and can do it quite well."

Ouachita has had success in their district series with Captain Shreve through the years. Playing in front of the home fans also has coaches and players of Ouachita excited for the game.

Most expect the key to lie with the Ouachita defense. They may not have seen a passing attack like the Gators will bring and it will be also be up to Ouachita to move the ball on offense to keep the Lions from spending too much defensive energy too early in the contest.

Ouachita remains confident a win will keep them in the hunt for their first district championship since 1994.
