Former Rebel ready to be Warhawk
Former West Monroe basketball star Hugh Mingo has verbally committed to play for the University of Louisiana-Monroe Warhawks next season.
Mingo played at South Plains Community College last season while helping to lead the squad to a NJCAA national championship.
As a senior at West Monroe, the 6-3 guard averaged 18 points and 13 rebounds per game. The Rebels reached at least the second round of the playoffs each year Mingo played on the varsity level.
West Monroe saw their record jump to 29-7 and reach the 5-A quarterfinal round during Mingo's junior campaign.
Mingo was a large part of the success in South Plains in 2007-08. Mingo visited ULM this past weekend and is expected to again help South Plains improve on a 30-5 record from a year ago.
Mingo was originally part of a local trio of stars signing with ULM in 2007 with Ouachita forward Mitchell Hampton and Peabody forward Rudy Turner.
Mingo opted to go to junior college and improve his grades before making the leap to Division I hoops.
While Mingo stays in the South Plains program one more season, the Warhawks began practice for another run at the Sun Belt Conference Championship last week.
The Warhawks will show the area what they can do on the hardwood in an exhibition game against William Carey College on Nov. 5.
The regular season begins with a home date against Morehead State on Nov. 14. |
