Carroll hosts Southwood Friday night
by Cody Futrell - posted E-mail Story E-mail Story | Print Story Print Story
The Carroll Bulldogs (1-5, 0-2) will entertain the Southwood Cowboys (0-7) this Friday at "The Dog Pound."

The C-Dogs have had their moments this season, but Hurricane Gustav cancelled their season opener against Ouachita and they have been a bit off-center since then.

The team has seen marked improvement in the offensive line and quarterback Xavier Gray in recent weeks. Gray produced three touchdowns against West Ouachita a week ago. Running back Pierre Martin is expected to bring a stout rushing attack against a Southwood defense that was torched for 357 yards rushing by West Monroe last week.

"The offense is getting better," Carroll head coach Jackie Hamilton said. "We have been blocking and running the ball pretty good."

The Carroll defense will contend with a Cowboys team prone to spread the field and use an option rushing attack.

The Bulldogs may have the most success against the run if Southwood continues to turn the ball over. Southwood had four turnovers against West Monroe last week in the 63-14 loss.

The game provides a glimpse at another 5-A team after an early season loss at Sulphur. Carroll hopes to gain confidence and major power points for playoff seeding if they can pull off the win over Southwood. Carroll would gain the points for playing a team in a higher classification.

The Bulldogs have two district games remaining to get back in the hunt for a playoff spot.
