Cedar Creek trips up St. Frederick

After rolling on a winning streak, the Saint Frederick Warriors ran into a major bump in the road Friday night in a 41-21 defeat at the hands of a fired-up Cedar Creek squad.

"We did not play well is the bottom line," St. Fred head coach Paul Guerriero said. "We did some good things offensively but could not get the defensive stops or enough points to hang around."

Cedar Creek (2-5, 1-1 in district 2-1A) wasted little time in racing out to a 14-0 lead. Zach Garner and Brent Myers each recorded a rushing touchdown to help guide the Cougars to the big first-quarter advantage.

Quarterback Andy Smith fired touchdown passes of 41 yards and 21 yards to David Patterson and Micheal Namour, respectively to give Cedar Creek a 28-14 halftime lead over St. Frederick (4-3, 1-1).

Just before halftime, Nick Leehy ran the ball in from eight-yards away to cut the Cedar Creek lead down to two touchdowns.

Leehy recorded a second rushing touchdown from 10-yards out to begin the scoring for the Warriors in the third quarter.

Cedar Creek ran and passed almost at will on Friday. It was something few teams have been successful in doing to the Warriors this season.

"We had a lack of mental preparation," Guerriero said. "We made too many mistakes on the defensive side of the football."

Garner rushed for three touchdowns in the game, a pair of those coming after intermission to seal the Warriors' fate.

Chris Buttitta continued to be a steady hand for the Warriors offensively. Buttitta rushed for 140 yards on 17 carries for the Warriors.

Although not getting a touchdown pass on Friday, Landon Williams continued to put the ball in the endzone with a third-quarter jaunt that netted the junior quarterback a rushing touchdown.

It was the signal caller's fifth rushing touchdown in two games for the Warriors. Williams has provided steady relief in the rushing game for Buttitta, according to his coaches.
