Story Archives: Panthers claw way past Ferriday

Panthers claw way past Ferriday
by Cody Futrell - posted E-mail Story E-mail Story | Print Story Print Story
The Sterlington Panthers got two touchdowns from running back Marquis Douglas and a pair of touchdown passes by quarterback Logan Dobson on their way to a 25-6 win over Ferriday Friday night.

Dobson was 9-of-13 for 142 yards and two touchdowns, the first of which went to Thomas Giddens in the second quarter to send Sterlington to the lockers with a 12-0 advantage.

"Logan (Dobson) improved a lot this week," Sterlington head coach Mike Collins said. "He took care of the ball and we only had two penalties."

Indeed, a recipe for success was concocted by the Panthers on offense. With no turnovers and only two penalties, Sterlington (4-3, 1-0 district 2-2A) was able to seize control early and ride out Ferriday storming back in the fourth quarter.

Running back Nelco Amado lead Ferriday down the field for a long touchdown drive late in the game.

Amado had a couple of first-down runs that set up quarterback Zurania Thompson's one-yard plunge into the endzone to complete the scoring.

Linebacker Lee Spence again led Sterlington in tackles as the Panthers limited Ferriday to just 66 yards through the air. Not being able to balance their offensive attack hindered Ferriday from getting any drives mounted until it was too little, too late.

"Lee (Spence) was a key contributor," Collins said. "The defense played their assignments and stopped the run effectively from Ferriday."

It was a "bend but do not break" evening for the Sterlington defense. Ferriday rushed for 241 yards but that labor yielded little fruit in the way of only six points.
