West Monroe beats Southwood, 63-14

The West Monroe offense exploded for 42 points in the first quarter as the Rebels ripped Southwood for a big homecoming win, 63-14, Friday night at Rebel Stadium.

Running back LaDarius Abrams sliced through the Southwood defense for a pair of first-quarter touchdowns. Abrams ran for 99 yards on seven carries.

The Rebels jumped out to a 21-0 lead when quarterback D.J. Banks found wide receiver Josh Remedies open for a big 50-yard scoring strike.

Banks was 2-of-3 for 70 yards before being pulled with the other West Monroe (6-1) starters after the end of the first quarter.

"It is the first time I can remember us scoring 42 points in the first quarter," Rebels head coach Don Shows said after the game. "We executed on offense from the beginning."

The Rebels defense, which held Southwood (0-7) to just 60 yards of total offense, also got into the scoring action during Friday night's first-quarter onslaught.

Linebacker Brakavious Mingo got his first touchdown on the season when he scooped up one of four Southwood fumbles and went into to score from three yards out.

Sophomore running back Doncorius Powell exploded into Rebel Stadium ready to make a statement against the helpless Southwood defense. He recorded his first 100-yard game at the varsity level, which included two touchdown runs for the Rebels.

Southwood's Jontarius Easterling found a seam in the second quarter and sprinted 88 yards to the endzone to finally put his team on the scoreboard.

Melvin Johnson scored from eight yards out to cut the WMHS lead to 56-14 before Demetri Hampton closed out the scoring with a 4-yard jaunt to pay dirt for West Monroe.

Austin Jackson played all of the second half at quarterback for West Monroe and completed 2-of-5 pass attempts for 31 yards in his first varsity action.
