Rebels to tangle with Southwood for Homecoming '08

With homecoming festivities to highlight this Friday's game against the Southwood Cowboys, the West Monroe Rebels are rested and ready for battle.

A week off has given the Rebels a new sense of energy as they prepare to enter the most crucial part of the 2008 season.

West Monroe currently sits atop of the district standings with Ouachita, Ruston, Captain Shreve and Byrd all breathing down their neck with one loss each.

West Monroe (5-0) is ranked second behind Acadiana High School in lastest Class 5A poll. The Rebels have predominantly struggled to put points on the scoreboard in the early part of each game.

West Monroe went scoreless in the entire first half against Byrd and Ouachita before scoring just six points in the first two quarters in its last outing against Airline.

D.J. Banks has impressed in his first season as the starting quarterback at West Monroe, and his running ability has opened up a new dimension for the Rebels.

Banks has combined with senior running back LaDarius Abrams and sophomore Tyler Cain to provide the Rebels with one of the fastest option attack offenses in the state.

The Southwood Cowboys (0-5) have struggled to stop just about anything thrown their way under first-year head coach Rodney Bagley.

Southwood has given up 42 points or more in four consecutive district ballgames this season.

Five fumbles also doomed the Cowboys against Ouachita last week. The Southwood offense seems to have trouble making good adjustments coming out of the lockers at halftime.

Southwood quarterback Anthony Belton connected with wide receiver Nick Collins on a 82-yard touchdown in the first quarter last week. The duo leads a Southwood passing attack that has seen some improvement from week to week before turnovers put them out of the running to get their first victory.

Kickoff at Rebel Stadium is set for 7 p.m. LA 105.3 FM will carry the game live on the radio and internet. The WMHS Homecoming Court 2008 will be presented at halftime.
