Story Archives: Sterlington ready for district foe Ferriday

Sterlington ready for district foe Ferriday
by Cody Futrell - posted E-mail Story E-mail Story | Print Story Print Story
The Sterlington Panthers have struggled all season to find their identity as a football team.

Up and down week after week, Sterlington (2-4) wants to find their footing this week with a district tilt against Ferriday (3-3).

"They are a solid team from what I have seen," Sterlington head coach Mike Collins said. "We have got to be more consistent and play better on both sides of the football."

Sterlington had three turnovers that killed any chance of a comeback during a 41-20 loss at West Ouachita last week.

"The offensive line is not blocking real well," Collins said. "On the other hand, we had way too many missed assignments on defense last week."

Ferriday will bring a skilled rushing attack into the game Friday night in Sterlington. The Panthers are trying to correct their tendency to give up the big scoring plays that doomed them trying to stop the rushing attack of West Ouachita.

Once thought to have depth issues, Sterlington has handled the transition of several players starting on both sides very well. Now they must find a way to play well throughout a four-quarter ballgame.

"The execution on offense must improve," Collins said. "We do not take care of the football and turnovers are killing us right now."

Dobson has thrown three touchdowns to wide-out Cole Bagby over the past two games. Sterlington has seen breakdowns in the offensive line cause problems for Dobson most of the season. Dobson was sacked five times against West Ouachita.

Marquis Douglas and DeUndre Gray were not as active last week as in previous games. Douglas must be a part of the running game against Ferriday now that the Panthers have an opportunity to start "the second season" off on the right foot.

The 7 p.m. contest at Panther Stadium will set up the race for a playoff spot in Sterlington.
