Story Archives: Ouachita ready for Natchitoches Central

Ouachita ready for Natchitoches Central
by Cody Futrell - posted E-mail Story E-mail Story | Print Story Print Story
With a dominating performance over rival Ruston behind them, the Ouachita Lions are ready to contend with another familiar foe on Friday night.

Not only will district rival Natchitoches Central (0-6) be across the field from the Lions, but former quarterbacks coach of the Lions, Brandon Helms, is in his first year as head coach of the Chiefs.

"Brandon (Helms) knows our system," Ouachita head coach John Carr said. "They have a great coaching staff and (Helms) was one of the first coaches I hired after getting to Ouachita."

Helms was a 2001-2004 assistant at Ouachita and has struggled with a Chiefs team hurting in the skill players positions as well as in overall team depth.

One focus of Ouachita (3-3) this week will be learning to put a big win behind them as they have in defeat.

"We have to be a veteran team," Carr said. "We have to learn to put a win behind us and move on to the next big game. This is a big district ballgame."

While Ouachita continues to run the ball with precision, it was the connection through the air of quarterback Corey Treadway and wide receiver Rareces Jones that has emerged as a real offensive threat for Ouachita.

Jones has four touchdown receptions this season and running back Montrell Conner is not the only weapon opposing teams can focus on now.

Conner still carries a wide range of duties for the Lions, but Natchitoches Central will have to get a pass rush on Treadway to stop the Lions from balancing the offense.

The goal now for Ouachita is to become a consistent winner, Carr said. Back-to-back district victories over Southwood and Ruston have set up the Lions for a run at a district title once thought lost after the heartbreaking defeat against West Monroe.

With renewed hope and sense of urgency, the Lions kickoff at Natchitoches Central at 7 p.m.
