Monroe man faces 50 years for sex crime

A Monroe man could spend as much as 50 years behind bars after a jury convicted him of attempting to place his hands down the pants of a seven year-old girl.

Clifton R. Williams, of Monroe, was found guilty of attempted sexual battery of a juvenile earlier this month.

Prosecutor Neal Johnson said he was pleased with the outcome of the trial.

"I have a great deal of satisfaction knowing a sexual predator is removed from our streets," said Johnson, following the Oct. 3 verdict.

The guilty verdict at trial marked Williams's second conviction for sex crimes. In 1998, Williams was sentenced to five years hard labor for indecent behavior with a juvenile.

Williams was arrested May 20, 2007, after the victim's mother reported the crime to deputies.

According to a police report, Williams asked to use the restroom of a residence near his automobile, which ran out of fuel on Short Thomas Road in West Monroe.

After exiting the restroom, Williams noticed the victim in her bedroom. The child reported to her mother that Williams attempted to place his hands down her pants.

Williams fled the scene but was arrested later, only four blocks from the scene.

Following closing arguments, the jury deliberated 20 minutes before returning its guilty verdict.

4th Judicial District Court Judge Scott Leehy revoked bond after the guilty verdict. Williams remains in jail pending sentencing.

Williams is scheduled to be sentenced Nov. 24. In the meantime, Johnson said he will decide whether to have Williams sentenced as a habitual offender.

"The jury only heard about his prior conviction for indecent behavior with a juvenile that occurred in 1998, for which he received a five year hard labor sentence," Johnson said. "They did not hear about that he was originally charged with two counts of aggravated rape, including an incident with his own child, and was allowed to plead to indecent behavior with a juvenile only because problems developed with witnesses."

If Williams is sentenced as a habitual offender, he would not be eligible for parole or early release.
