Annual cemetery tour planned for Oct. 26

Temple B'nai Israel and the Ouachita Parish Library will present a walking tour of Monroe City and Temple B'nai Jewish cemeteries on Sunday, Oct. 26. Lora Peppers, Genealogy associate at Ouachita Parish Library, will lead the tour.

The tour starts at 2 p.m. and will repeat again at 4 p.m., starting at the City Cemetery on DeSiard Street. The tour is free but reservations must be made in advance by calling the Temple office at 387-0730. Please give your name and phone number and the number of people in your party.

The tour was introduced last year as a way to invite the public to learn about Monroe by looking at the past. Peppers noted that tours of the city cemetery are always very popular, but people on tour often inquire about the Jewish cemetery nearby. Project chairman Don Marcus agreed the combined tour is a good way for people to learn more about how Monroe's early citizens contributed to local history.

Marcus is also planning a concert to be scheduled on Jan. 24 to benefit the Jewish cemetery. More information will be released in the near future.

For more information, call Temple B'nai Israel office at 387-0730.
