Chiefs, Panthers put wins on the line

West Ouachita and Sterlington both got the proverbial monkey off of their backs last week.

This week, the monkey will jump back on one of them since they play each other Friday night.

Both teams earned more respect with wins last week. West Ouachita finally won a close game with a 42-41 homecoming win over Tioga. Sterlington shocked top-ranked Ouachita Christian School with a 30-25 victory.

With both teams looking to use this rivalry game to keep their winning ways in tact, fans will pack Sims Stadium Friday night looking for a physical game.

"They are big and physical," Sterlington head coach Mike Collins said. "Winnfield was bigger than us too. We have to get better in the offensive line."

Sterlington (2-3) ran effectively and passed successfully most of the game against OCS. The offensive line will be out manned against West Ouachita (2-3), but Panthers coaches are working a physical style they hope will offset some of the size problems.

West Ouachita quarterback Matt Calhoun ran for two scores and had a touchdown pass against Tioga last week. The Chiefs offense will also try to balance their attack with running back Billy Minnifield who had a 73-yard touchdown jaunt last week.

"We have to find a way to stop their run," Collins said. "It will be a physical game from the start."

West Ouachita will have to overcome a dangerous passing game by Sterlington. Logan Dobson leads the Panthers with six touchdown passes.

"We had some pass defense breakdowns," West Ouachita head coach Mitch Thomas said. "We have been working to get better there this week."

It will be the Chiefs defense responsible for also containing DeUndre Gray and Marquis Douglas who have been speed problems for most defensive units facing Sterlington this season.
