Ouachita looks to knock off Ruston

Another classic Class 5A rivalry will go down Friday when the Ruston Bearcats visit Lions Stadium to tangle with Ouachita Parish High School.

Ouachita (3-2) will be attempting to knock Ruston (4-1) off track in the District 1-5A championship race while keeping its own hopes alive.

"Defensively we know they are a handful," said Ouachita head coach John Carr. "We must be balanced and keep focused for four quarters."

The Lions will be looking to avenge an embarrassing 31-7 loss at Ruston last season.

"I hope that will be a motivator," Carr said. "We know we will be getting their best game."

Ruston is coming off its first loss of the season in a 13-0 shutout at the hands of the Byrd Yellow Jackets last week.

Quarterback Nick Rome is a duel threat to run and throw the ball successfully for a Ruston offense, which found the end zone often before the debacle against Byrd.

"We must contain all their play-makers," Carr said. "This is going to be really fun game."

Running Back Montrell Conner has rushed for more than 200 yards in two consecutive district games for Ouachita.

The Mississippi State commitment has emerged as one of the most prolific running backs in Ouachita history. He is a top recruit out of the state of Louisiana.

With 114 yards passing last week versus Southwood, quarterback Corey Treadway continues to impress coaches with his throwing and decision making abilities.

Ruston will present a real passing challenge because of their physical plays in pressuring opposing quarterbacks into bad decisions.

The Lions worked this week on staying balanced and protecting the quarterback in critical situations.

Kickoff for the Ouachita/Ruston match-up is scheduled for 7 p.m.
