Story Archives: Carroll, Neville opend district in 'Dog Pound'

Carroll, Neville opend district in 'Dog Pound'
by Cody Futrell - posted E-mail Story E-mail Story | Print Story Print Story
Neville and Carroll open District 2-4A play Friday night at Carroll in a match up that pits haves and have-nots.

The Tigers have gone on a winning tear of four straight since their opening season loss, while Carroll has lost four straight before picking up its first win of the season in last week's action.

Neville has spread the ball around so well this season that the Tigers (4-1) have not been stopped much since the embarrassing loss at home against Ruston in week one of the 2008 season.

Neville has used strong performances from quarterback Taylor Birch and running back DeAndre Reed to throttle opponent after opponent.

But Neville coach Mickey McCarty is leery of Carroll.

"Carroll is so fast," McCarty said. "They have a real good looking back in Pierre Martin."

Martin has found his stride and is becoming a real threat out of the C-Dog backfield. Martin, though, isn't the only threat Carroll possess offensively.

Xavier Gray fired four touchdown passes last week for the Bulldogs, serving notice that he has become a threat as the Carroll signal-caller.

"They are getting better each week," McCarty said. "We have to put pressure on them and get to the quarterback."

The Carroll defense showed up, too, in the C-Dog's first win of the season, a big one at Booker T. Washington in Shreveport.

"This is a physical defense," McCarty said. "We have to be balanced to be successful Friday night."

While Neville's Birch continues to throw touchdown passes to several targets, he has been using his legs to get tough yards, posting a total of five touchdowns along the way.

The duel threat at quarterback by both squads figures to make for an exciting district opening game when the Tigers and C-Dogs kickoff at 7 p.m. Friday.
