Board seeks bids to build bridge near West Monroe's football field

The Ouachita Parish School Board agreed to advertise for bids to construct a walking bridge over a drainage canal near the football field at West Monroe High School.

Action was taken Tuesday during the school board's regular meeting.

The project could cost around $100,000, but school board vice president Jerry Hicks expects it to be completed for much less.

The school board originally looked at filling in the drainage canal, but that project was deemed too expensive at an estimated cost of some $2 million.

Hicks said a bridge was needed to adjoin two pieces of property at the high school so students would not have to walk around the property along North 7th Street or other roadways.

"The band needs a place to practice and we're trying to get this bridge so we can get traffic around without going to one of the highways," Hicks said. "It's a real need to have that property so we can adjoin it."

"I think we'll eventually put tennis courts for the high school there," Hicks explained. "It will also provide a place for the band to go and practice. It would make it real convenient for the band, and they seem real excited about it."

Board member Scott Robinson said West Monroe's band needs a location to practice. He also pointed out that building a bridge would be more cost efficient than pursuing other options.

"We've got to have a place for the band to practice, and this is the cheaper option," Robinson said. "We have this land; we just need a way to get to it without marching them down North 7th Street."

The proposed bridge would be similar to West Monroe's restoration park bridge. It would extend 80 feet in length and six feet wide. It also would entail rails and other safety features, Hicks said.

Hicks also said the bridge probably would need swing gates at each end to prevent people from driving "something across it that shouldn't be going across it."

Robinson said funding for the project would come from the west side school construction funds.
