Carroll grabs first win of season
posted E-mail Story E-mail Story | Print Story Print Story
After weeks of frustration, the Carroll Bulldogs (1-3) established some momentum in a 24-12 victory Friday at Booker T. Washington in Shreveport.

Quarterback Xavier Gray ignited the Carroll offense with a potent passing attack. Gray was 7-of-11 for 189 yards.

Gray tossed touchdown strikes of 37, 25, 87 and 7 yards in the contest. Carroll's pass protection improved against BTW, allowing Gray time to find his receivers.

With the two teams trading scores in the third quarter, Gray broke away from two defenders and found Cordell Collins streaking down the sideline for an 87-yard touchdown.

That proved to be the difference as the C-Dogs defense held off a late BTW rally to seal the first victory of 2008 for Carroll.

Collins had 117 yards and two touchdowns receiving for Carroll. While BTW kept the C-Dogs running game in check, Gray made BTW pay through the air.

The Lions looked to be running away in the first half as two touchdown runs by running back Jessie Sheppard put BTW ahead early.

Sheppard sliced through the Carroll defense on his way to 162 yards rushing on 25 carries at Barnes Stadium.

Gray had just six touchdown passes in all this season before his outburst Friday night. His performance matched a career-high in touchdown passes in a single game for the signal-caller.

Carroll is set to battle arch-rival Neville in the first District 2-4A battle of the season for the two teams Friday beginning at 7 p.m.
