Ouachita picks up easy win at Southwood
by Cody Futrell - posted E-mail Story E-mail Story | Print Story Print Story
Erasing the memories of a week ago, the Ouachita Lions pounced on Southwood for a 51-20 victory Friday night in Shreveport.

The workhorse of the Lions, running back Montrell Conner, broke several big runs on the first offensive possession before plunging in from a yard out for a 7-0 Ouachita lead.

Ouachita (3-2) benefited once again from a strong running game as Conner emerged as one of the best backs in Louisiana this season. He posted 267 yards rushing and two touchdowns against Southwood. Conner now has six rushing touchdowns since the beginning of District 1-5A play.

"We felt defensively they had some problems against the run," said Ouachita head coach John Carr. "Montrell (Conner) is a special player and ran well for us."

Quarterback Corey Treadway got into the act on the next possession with a 20-yard touchdown pass to Ryan Gebhardt. The catch was the third touchdown pass of the season from Treadway to Gebhardt.

Treadway again found the endzone when he hit Chris Bolton for a 51-yard scoring strike.

The Lions took a 25-6 lead into halftime following a Treadway interception, which was returned for a touchdown at the end of the first quarter.

Treadway was 7-of-12 passing for 114 yards and two touchdowns for the Lions.

Sophomore Timothy Richardson ignited the backups in the fourth quarter with a 3-yard touchdown run. Richardson carried the ball 13 times for 87 yards in the contest.

"We tired to jump on them early and play tough," Carr said. "We needed to get a game where we try to pound the ball on the ground."
