Story Archives: No. 1 OCS battles rival Sterlington

No. 1 OCS battles rival Sterlington

Another big rivalry will rear its head Friday when No. 1 ranked OCS Eagles entertain Sterlington.

Two schools separated by a mere five miles along U.S. Highway 165 will do battle with one trying to keep its top spot in Class 1A and another trying to pick up the pieces in Class 2A.

OCS leaped over defending state champion South Plaquemines for the top ranking in the state after a resounding victory over Madison Parish last week.

OCS (4-0) is averaging over 400 yards per game behind the backfield of quarterback Jacob Davis and running back Matt Kennedy.

Davis had 200 yards passing and has thrown 8 touchdown passes this season with a strong supporting cast, keeping defenses guessing. OCS keeps making big plays, too, at the appropriate time.

"The defense is lights out right now over there," Sterlington head coach Mike Collins said of OCS.

"We have to keep working and not make so many silly penalties and shoot ourselves in the foot." Collins said.

Coming off what coaches believe was their best defensive effort of the year, OCS is continuing to perfect its offensive execution to put a complete product on the field.

"We need to continue to improve our offensive execution," said OCS head coach Steven Fitzhugh. "We had some missed assignments we want to correct this week in practice."

Kennedy is the key for OCS right now after a triple dose of touchdowns rushing and 91 total yards against Madison.

Sterlington has struggled to put a complete game together on offense as the Panthers have dug early holes against quality opponents.

Logan Dobson and DeUndre Gray continue to play well under a new offensive coaching philosophy.

"Their record is very deceiving," Fitzhugh said of Sterlington. "Whoever makes the fewest mistakes this week is going to win the game."
