Chiefs to tangle with Tioga in Cadeville

With a pair of tough losses behind them, the West Ouachita Chiefs (1-3) will try to reverse their fortunes when they meet up with the Tioga Indians Friday night at Sims Stadium.

The Chiefs fell in a 10-0 hole early last week against Airline and will attempt to climb out of that misfortune this week.

"We need to better establish the run game," West Ouachita head coach Mitch Thomas said. "That will give us a better pass game."

Quarterback Matt Calhoun has four touchdown passes and five rushing touchdowns so far this season. The Chiefs have been very limited in their ability to pass the ball consistently as of late.

West Ouachita knows it will not be easy to get the monkey off their back against a spread offense that will challenge the team such as Homer did three weeks ago.

"They will want to spread it out," Thomas said. "We have to have these kids stick to their assignment and know the team will be there for them."

Two turnovers also hurt the Chiefs against Airline a week ago. Keeping the defense off of the field will be another big key to West Ouachita getting back on a winning track.

"We have to limit our mental mistakes and turnovers," Thomas said. "If we do that we can be successful with so much football left on our schedule."

Tioga (1-2) is coming off their first win of the year last week in a 28-21 decision over Bolton. The Indians lost to 5-A Pineville and 4-A Opelousas to open the season.

Tioga has especially struggled on defense where they are giving up about 28 points per game. The Chiefs will attempt to spread them thin and balance the attack on Friday with the game beginning at 7 p.m.

ESPN 97.7 FM will broadcast the game live on Friday night.
