Next meeting features Oxford professor

The English-Speaking Union was treated on Sept. 16 to a guided tour by slides and lecture of the Department of Archives in Baton Rouge.
The Louisiana Archives, which is located in Baton Rouge, ranks very high among the states in efficiency and quality. Some records date back to the early 1800s.
A question-and-answer session followed the presentation, which was given by Dr. Florent Hardy, director of the archives.
Joan Chardkoff, president, delighted Hardy by conversing with him in French. She recognized new members, including Dr. David Atchison, Marcel Bloch, Emily Burrows, Sharon Burkett, Peggy Clay, Rebecca Harrod, Gloria Lee, Brucie Mintz, Susan Thompson, Craig Lott, Linda Stewart and Ann White.
Sylvester Breard, former Shakespeare competition chairman, read a letter from last year's winner, in which she told of her memorable trip to New York to compete.
A reception under the auspices of Mary Beth Weaks preceded the presentation. The refreshment table was centered with an arrangement of pink gladiola in an oriental urn.
About 70 members and guests attended the meeting, which was held at Grace Episcopal Church's Kilbourne Hall.
The next meeting will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 2, at Bayou DeSiard Country Club.
Peter Harris, an Evelyn Wrench Speaker, will be the featured guest.
Harris currently teaches at the Oxford Centre for Family Law and Policy at The University of Oxford, England.
His topic will be "The Americanization of England."
A cash bar begins at 5:30 p.m., with dinner at 6 p.m.
