The Friends of Black Bayou and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service will host the annual fall celebration at Black Bayou National Wildlife Refuge from 10 a.m.- 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 11.

The public is invited to the free event. Fried catfish, Black Bayou Lake mud pie, jambalaya and drinks will be served free at lunchtime.

The celebration will also include family-oriented activities such as free canoeing on the lake, guided bird walks and arboretum walks, family hikes with prizes, a black bear maze, a release of baby alligator snapping turtles and a display of the annual photo contest winners.

Newly designed Black Bayou Lake NWR T-shirts and souvenirs will be available in the bookshop, where Daniel Myers, illustrator of the Moby Pincher books by Dee Scallan will be signing books and doing drawing demonstrations.

At 1 p.m., children will be invited to help in turning the Blue Goose Migratory Bird sculpture from north to south, followed by the turtle release. Other scheduled activities include the first bird walk of the day at 8 a.m., an arboretum walk at 10 a.m. and a drawing for a new kayak at 2:30 p.m.

Cooperating partner organizations include Biedenharn Museum & Gardens, Masur Museum, The Children's Museum, Louisiana Purchase Zoo, Home Depot and the LSU Raptor Rehab Hospital.
