Carroll-Richwood showdown Friday
posted E-mail Story E-mail Story | Print Story Print Story
Both Carroll and Richwood are coming off tough losses last week--losses they would like to forget by winning against each other Friday. Someone's going to be disappointed.

Carroll lost to 5-A contender Sulphur while Richwood lost to defending 4-A champion Bastrop last week.

Carroll (0-2) has seen its chances of success be diminished by a lack of size in its first two games. The speed of the C-Dogs has yet to take shape.

"We held our own against Sulphur," Carroll head coach Jackie Hamilton said. "Sulphur was too big and strong."

Richwood continues to see problems in the offensive line. Each week the Rams have made the offensive line improving as a top priority to protect quarterback Greg Johnson.

"We have to improve in the offensive line," Richwood coach Warren Trimble said. "Greg (Johnson) had to scramble too much at Bastrop."

Richard Wilson has been a favorite target of Johnson and Carroll will certainly be tested by a speedy and talented Richwood offense.

The C-Dogs have a great leader on offense too in quarterback Xavier Gray. Gray threw two touchdown passes at Sulphur last week and has kept the Carroll team in games with his play-making ability scrambling out of the pocket.

Richwood will focus on containing the skilled athletes at Carroll and keeping a defense off the field at Richwood that has logged a lot of minutes already this year.

Carroll running back Pierre Martin had a breakout performance last week at Sulphur and figures to be a big part of the Carroll offense that Richwood will have to limit.

Martin put together 87 yards rushing in the loss at Sulphur. He gives the C-Dogs a solid go-to-guy behind Gray.

Kickoff at Richwood Stadium is set for 7 p.m. Friday night.
