A defensive battle did not pan out for Sterlington Friday as the Panthers fell short against Winnfield, 7-6.

Jacob Pruitt and LaQuentin Allen led the Panthers in tackles as the two teams battled through a scoreless first quarter.

Sterlington (1-2) had trouble with Winnfield's large defensive front. But a Marquis Douglas 2-yard touchdown run gave broke the ice to give the Panthers a 6-0 lead.

A touchdown run from 1 yard out by Winnfield's Andrew Bates tied the game. Caleb Austin added the extra point attempt.

"We had too many mental mistakes," said Sterlington head coach Mike Collins. "The two turnovers hurt and the size differential for those that saw the game was a factor, too."

Sterlington quarterback Logan Dobson threw for 65 yards on just 9-of-22 passing with a pair of interceptions. None of the turnovers led to Winnfield points but did keep the Panthers offense out of rhythm and off the scoreboard following the Douglas score.

"I thought the defense played okay," Collins said. "Lee Spence is a returning all-state player who had a good game."

Collins also felt his front of brothers Dillon and Grant Bardin helped keep Sterlington in the game until the end.

"We need our mental approach to get better," Collins said. "We can not have too many breakdowns such as we did Friday night."

Douglas finished with 33 yards on the ground. DeUndre Gray led the rushing attack for Sterlington with 42 yards on just four carries.
