Carroll takes it on the nose at Class 5A Sulphur

Taking a Class 4A school into the big house to play a perennial 5A powerhouse is never easy. Carroll found out the hard way in a 49-24 loss at Sulphur Friday.

"I saw some good things," said Carroll head coach Jackie Hamilton. "We let them have two kickoff returns for a touchdown and you can not give that to a school of their size."

The Bulldogs yielded a first half and second half kick return for a touchdown, giving the C-Dogs something to improve upon heading into their bout with Richwood this week.

Xavier Gray again led the Carroll offense on several scoring drives by completing 12-of-21 passes for 178 yards.

Gray was in control until some extra pressure by Sulphur's stronger defensive took its toll at every turn.

Gray brought Carroll out of the hole in the first quarter after a pair of Sulphur gave the Tors a 14-0 lead.

Gray found Cordell Collins for a big 29-yard touchdown pass toward the end of the opening frame.

"I thought we ran and passed pretty well," Hamilton said. "We need to pass block a bit better but I was proud of the good effort we had against a good Sulphur team."

Gray ran for 39 yards and Pierre Martin went wild in the second half to lead the Carroll rally with 87 yards and a score on 13 carries.

A 50-yard interception for a score by Sulphur's Nick Tramonte sealed the win for the Golden Tors.

Carroll visits Richwood Friday in a city schools versus parish schools showdown. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
