'Air' Banks gives West Monroe district win over Byrd

A scoreless first half evolved into a big third quarter for West Monroe as the Rebels outlasted Byrd Friday night, 17-7.

The two teams battled defensively in the first half, while penalties in crucial situations prevented the West Monroe offense from scoring.

"Byrd came out ready to play," said West Monroe coach Don Shows. "Their coaches did a really good job getting them ready to play."

West Monroe got on the scoreboard in the third quarter after a 2-yard touchdown run by senior D.J. Banks.

The Rebels again held Byrd to set up the next West Monroe touchdown. Banks found senior wide-out Josh Remedies for a 56-yard touchdown pass late in the period to send the Rebels into the final frame with a 14-0 lead.

"We had some big offensive plays," Shows said. "That was the difference in the ballgame."

Cody Hollis connected on a 28-yard field goal to put West Monroe on top, 17-0.

Quarterback Clint Bickham found John Martin Anthony on a 22-yard touchdown pass late in the game to avoid he shutout.

Usually a big momentum changer, the Rebel rushing attack could not find ground against a stellar Byrd defensive front.

West Monroe put up just 60 yards rushing as a team in the first half. Running back LaDarius Abrams missed most of the second half with a busted lip.

The Byrd defense committed to stopping the run. That opened up the air for Banks, who had success throwing the football. The senior was 7-of-16 for 185 yards passing.

West Monroe heads to the "Lions Den" Friday night for a showdown versus District 1-5A foe Ouachita. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
