Bastrop shows Richwood why the Rams are defending state champs Whether through the air or on the ground, Reuben Randle made plays for Bastrop as the defending Class 4A state champs dismantled Richwood Friday night, 40-12.
Randle had five total touchdowns to lead Bastrop to victory. Randle added a 59-yard punt return to three passing scores and a 5-yard rushing touchdown on the night.
"He is real big and strong," said Richwood head coach Warren Trimble. "He is so hard to contain."
Randle wasn't alone in giving Richwood trouble.
The Rams struggled to contain Bastrop's pass rush, forcing Richwood quarterback Greg Johnson to make plays with his feet. He ran for a 31-yard touchdown in the second quarter. In all, Richwood out rushed Bastrop 127-64 in the contest.
"They pressured us so Greg had to scramble too much," Trimble said. "We have to improve with protecting our quarterback."
Defensively, the out manned Rams held up well under immense pressure from Bastrop's all-everything quarterback, Randle, who was just 7-of-20 passing.
Meanwhile, Bastrop took Richard Wilson's rushing lanes away from him, limiting the senior to just 12 yards on the ground. With so much defensive pressure, Richwood was limited in what the Rams could do with the ball.
Kevin Chatman was the leading rusher for Bastrop with 19 yards on six carries. Stanley Moore had a breakout game for Bastrop with 108 yards receiving.
Richwood returns home to battle cross-town rival Carroll Friday night at 7 p.m. |
