Chiefs take on Haughton in third road trip in as many games

The West Ouachita Chiefs (1-1) visit Haughton (2-0) this week for their third consecutive road game. The Chiefs defeated DeRidder, 21-6, in week one of the 2008 season before falling at Homer last week, 27-12.

Quarterback Matt Calhoun has thrown for three touchdowns as he continues to improve in the season.

"I think Matt (Calhoun) played real well," West Ouachita head coach Mitch Thomas said. "He made some good throws and we caught some passes."

Jarvis Grayson has been the star rushing the football. Grayson has three touchdowns and almost 300 yards up to this point at the running back position.

Haughton presents the Chiefs offense with a huge test this week. Aggressive defensively, Haughton blitzed its way to two straight victories.

The Haughton defense has allowed just 20 points on the year in a pair of lopsided victories. Haughton defeated Mansfield 48-14 in week one before throttling Green Oaks 36-6 last week.

West Ouachita worked on stopping the run at practice this week. The Chiefs surrendered over 200 yards rushing at Homer last week.

On offense, West Ouachita could stand to see better production out of its passing game. The coaches are working to correct pass protection problems. Dropped passes were an area of concern for the Chiefs last week, too. Thomas hopes West Ouachita won't have that problem this week versus Haughton.

While West Ouachita will wrap up a tough three-game road swing Friday Haughton, the Chiefs will get a break, beginning next week, when they kick off three weeks of home games.

Kickoff Friday at Haughton is scheduled for 7 p.m. Radio broadcast will be available on ESPN 97.7 FM.
