Carroll to square of with Class 5A Sulphur
posted E-mail Story E-mail Story | Print Story Print Story
After a disappointing loss at Wossman last week, Carroll will hit the road for another tough out-of-district experience with Class 5A Sulphur.

The Tornados have made runs through the 5A playoffs in the last few seasons, including a trip to the quarter-finals in 2006.

A balanced rushing attack is the key for Sulphur (0-1), which saw its first game of the year washed away by Hurricane Gustav. A trip to Lafayette in week two of the 2008 season was no joy ride as the Tornados fell to Lafayette High, 14-10.

"We have to stop their (Sulphur) running game," said Carroll head coach Jackie Hamilton. "We don't fear their passing."

Sulphur's option rushing attack and bullish offensive line, which has good size, is a concern for Carroll.

Quarterback Logan Nezat and tailback Will Hassien lead Sulphur's rushing attack. Hassien delivered the only touchdown for the Tornados in their loss at Lafayette.

For their part, Carroll's Bulldogs have worked on improving their offensive execution. The C-Dogs cannot afford to turn the ball over against a quality team like the Tornados.

"We have been working on eliminating turnovers," Hamilton said. "We have to learn how to tackle better and knowing our assignments."

Too many blown assignments by the defense hurt Carroll in the loss to Wossman last week, which is something Hamilton thinks his team is improving upon.

"We have had improvement in practice," Hamilton said. "Kids came in and worked hard after the loss."

A schedule like Carroll's, which also includes non-district games with Richwood and Booker T. Washington before opening district play with Neville, is a formidable one.

Class 5A Southwood is also sandwiched into the middle of the district slate. This is a schedule that Hamilton inherited and thinks will prepare the C-Dogs for the tough district race that lies before them.

Kickoff at Sulphur Stadium is scheduled for Friday night at 7 p.m.
