Turnovers cost Sterlington in 28-19 loss to Rayville

A trio of costly turnovers spelled doom for Sterlington in a 28-19 loss to Rayville Friday at Panther Stadium.

"We had poor offensive execution," Sterlington head coach Mike Collins said. "The two interceptions and fumble were killers."

The Panthers (1-1) dug a hole early that they could not recover from when Ellis Hamp picked off a Logan Dobson pass and took it 62 yards for a score.

The 7-0 Rayville lead off the interception was a sign of more to come.

Hamp scored on a pair of one-yard runs in the next two quarters to build a 20-7 lead for the Hornets.

Sterlington had seized the lead after one quarter with a Dobson touchdown pass to DeUndre Gray.

"I thought (DeUndre) Gray had a good game," Collins said. "But we have to do a better overall job of offensive execution."

The coaches were pleased with the offensive line production and believe that is one area the team is building on early in the season.

Marquis Douglas ran in the final Sterlington touchdown from eight yards out with less than two minutes to play.

Sterlington will return to the field Friday night with a 7 p.m. kickoff at Winnfield. The following week, Sterlington will travel to Oak Grove.
