West Monroe throttles Leesville; Rebels eye district play

After Hurricane Gustav prompted the West Monroe Rebels to cancel a date at Thibodaux, 4A powerhouse Leesville stepped into Rebel Stadium Saturday with upset on its mind.

The Rebels, ranked second in class 5A, quickly dispatched those aspirations for a 28-7 victory over the visiting Wampus Cats.

West Monroe (1-0) out gained Leesville 265-180 rushing but Leesville had more yards overall (238-226) thanks to a balanced passing attack that West Monroe did not match.

Micheal Ford, an LSU commitment, was the talk before the game. The Rebel defense limited Ford in the first half, but an 85-yard sprint in the third quarter led him to 180 yards and a score on the night.

LaDarius Abrams showed up his counterpart when he rushed for 155 yards and three touchdowns to pace the Rebel offense.

"(LaDarius) Abrams just made some big runs," West Monroe coach Don Shows said. "He made some nice plays and he has been doing that for four years."

D.J. Banks started at quarterback, completing 5-of-10 passes for 61 yards.

Tyler Cain made four catches for 21 yards to lead all West Monroe wide receivers.

The Rebel defense was in the backfield all night causing Leesville quarterback Trevante Stallworth to make some off balance throws. Stallworth still threw 19-of-31 for 178 yards in the contest.

West Monroe turned back the Leesville (0-1) on numerous occasions, including a 62-yard fumble return for a score by David Eley.

West Monroe hosts Huntington in a Class 2-5A match-up Friday night. Kickoff at Rebel Stadium is set for 7 p.m.
