Sterlington knocks off 3A Caldwell
posted E-mail Story E-mail Story | Print Story Print Story
Sterlington used a big defensive play late in the fourth quarter to nab a season opening victory over the Caldwell Spartans Friday night, 26-18.

Quarterback Logan Dobson was a solid 17-of-20 for 195 yards and three touchdowns for the Panthers (1-0). The Panthers went back and forth with the Spartans for most of the night.

While there is still work to be done on both sides of the ball this early in the season, Sterlington coaches were pleased with the progress the Panthers showed, especially offensively in week one.

"Our offensive line looked better," Sterlington head coach Mike Collins said. "Logan (Dobson) played pretty well for us with three touchdown passes."

Still dealing with depth issues, the Sterlington defense surrendered 250 yards rushing to Caldwell (0-1). Much of that came on one touchdown run when Sentarius Donald sprinted 65 yards for a third quarter score to cut into the Panthers lead.

"That is a guy you will see playing on Saturdays, soon," Collins said. "He made a real good touchdown run of about sixty-five yards."

A Dobson-to-Cole Bagby touchdown strike in the fourth quarter gave Sterlington a 26-18 lead. It was then up to the Panthers defense to make a stop.

And the Sterlington defense answered the call.

Dillon Barton, who led the Panthers with 14 tackles, jumped on a Caldwell fumble in the fourth quarter that ended Caldwell's stab at a comeback.

Sterlington hosts Class 3A contender Rayville on Friday at 7 p.m.
