A West Ouachita ground game that could do no wrong and an opportunistic defense delivered the Chiefs a 21-6 win over DeRidder Friday night.

The Chiefs scheduled a trip to DeRidder after a trip to Pineville was canceled in the wake of Hurricane Gustav.

Quarterback Matt Calhoun led West Ouachita (1-0) on a first quarter touchdown capped by his one-yard plunge into the end zone.

The 7-0 lead would hold for the Chiefs until halftime as the West Ouachita defense held DeRidder to no first downs in the first half.

West Ouachita fumbled away a couple of scoring opportunities in the third quarter. DeRidder made them pay with a 15-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Sam Peterson to Sean Freeman.

Jarvis Grayson finished with 128 yards rushing and a score that came in the third quarter to put the Chiefs ahead, 14-6.

The West Ouachita defense held the DeRidder offense to just 124 yards, including 7 yards rushing.

Calhoun was 5-of-15 passing for 33 yards.

West Ouachita will travel to Homer (1-0) Friday. Kickoff against the Pelicans is scheduled for 7 p.m.
