Ouachita holds off Richwood in first meeting since 1978

With each team putting together a vaunted rushing attack, the Ouachita Lions sprinted past the Richwood Rams Friday night, 31-28.

Montrell Conner finished the game with 242 yards and two touchdown runs for Ouachita. The Mississippi State Bulldog commitment slashed through the Richwood defense most of the night as Ouachita's own defense struggled to contain an athletic Rams offense.

The first meeting between the schools since 1978 electrified a sold out Lions Stadium.

Richwood started the game with a scoring drive capped by the 7-yard touchdown run by Greg Johnson. A missed PAT left the Rams ahead, 6-0.

Conner led the Lions' response on a lengthy drive that saw the running back break away for an 11-yard score.

The two teams traded scores until Richwood wrestled the lead away from Ouachita near the end of the first half.

Johnson scored on another run to give Richwood a 20-14 halftime lead following another missed extra point. He was 18-of-25 for 226 yards and one touchdown passing on the night. The senior also had 106 yards and two touchdowns rushing for Richwood.

A flurry of mistakes, including a third quarter fumble doomed Richwood in the final two periods of play.

Ouachita quarterback Corey Treadway ran in a score on the third quarter's first series, making his presence known as a leader at quarterback for the Lions.

Conner later blasted down the sideline for a 75-yard run late in the third to give Ouachita a 31-20 lead.

"My hats off to Richwood," Ouachita coach John Carr said. "They are a well coached team."

Ouachita hosts Neville this week, while Richwood hosts 3A powerhouse Redemptorist Friday night.
