Annual Red Mass rescheduled
posted E-mail Story E-mail Story | Print Story Print Story
The 15th annual Red Mass has been rescheduled for Tuesday, Sept. 9.

Red Mass will be held 1 p.m. Tuesday at St. Matthew Catholic Church, located at 121 Jackson St. in Monroe.

The official opening of court for 4th Judicial District will be held 3 p.m. in courtroom No. 2 at the Ouachita Parish Courthouse.

Each year, an opening of court is held following the Red Mass ceremonies to memorialize members of the Fourth Judicial District Bar Association and for members of the bar association to get to know one another better, especially new members of the bar.

The solemn votive Mass of the Holy Spirit is celebrated annually at the opening of the judicial year.

Judges, lawyers, legal associates and public officials joined in "evoking God's blessing and guidance in the administration of justice."

The tradition of the Red Mass goes back many centuries in Rome, Paris and London.

In the United States, the Red Mass was inaugurated in 1928 in New York City.

In Louisiana, the first Red Mass was offered in New Orleans' historic St. Louis Cathedral on Oct. 5, 1953.

The local Red Mass is held annually at historic St. Matthew Church, the oldest church edifice in Monroe, and the oldest Catholic church in north Louisiana.
