Story Archives: Neville awaits arch-rival Ruston

Neville awaits arch-rival Ruston
posted E-mail Story E-mail Story | Print Story Print Story
Following a 14-6 loss to West Monroe in Bayou Jamb action Saturday, the Neville Tigers are working on correcting mistakes they made in the jamboree before taking on arch-rival Ruston.

Hurricane Gustav, though, made practicing a bit difficult as rain drenched Neville's practice field this week.

"We got out there Monday," said Neville coach Mickey McCarty. "We had to go inside on Tuesday and do the best we can."

The schedule for this week's Neville/Ruston match-up was altered, too. The game was moved from Thursday to 7 p.m. Friday at Bill Ruple Stadium. The game also was scheduled to be broadcast by COX Sports as the game of the week. It was unclear as of press time whether COX Sports would broadcast the Neville/Ruston bout because of damage caused by Gustav.

Back at Neville, the Tigers have some work to do, according to their coaches. Neville will use the extra day of practice this week to work on problems coaches noticed in jamboree play against West Monroe.

"We looked at the film and saw some stuff to work on," McCarty said. "We have some technique and fundamentals (problems), but both of those are correctable.

The Ruston Bearcats present an interesting challenge for Neville in week one of the 2008 regular season. Ruston has an experienced quarterback in Nick Rome. The Bearcats also have size and strength aplenty on the offensive and defensive lines.

"They have some size compared to us," McCarty said. "(Nick) Rome is real good, and they have some speed at the running back position."
