Story Archives: Carroll, Ouachita game likely to be cancelled

Carroll, Ouachita game likely to be cancelled

Wossman and Carroll have enjoyed one of the most storied and intense rivalries in Ouachita Parish high school sports over the decades in head-to-head combat on the gridiron.

Wossman got the better of their rivalry in a jamboree contest at "The Dog Pound" Friday night with a 12-7 victory of Carroll.

Now the Bulldogs turn their attention to the Ouachita Lions in a cross-town rivalry that has produced many great games over the years. But it was doubtful late Wednesday whether the game would be played because of field conditions at Carroll. A decision on whether to play the game at Carroll was expected some time Thursday.

Ouachita defeated the Ruston Bearcats 14-7 Saturday at Bayou Jamb at ULM's Malone Stadium.

"We wanted to see how our guys would compete," Ouachita head coach John Carr said. "We saw some things on film that we want to correct."

Some missed tackles and missed assignments on the defensive side of the ball are some of the things Ouachita is looking to do better when playing Carroll on Friday.

Xavier Gray was a backup quarterback at Ouachita last season; he will now suit up as the Carroll's starter in week one.

Carroll will be working this week on improving pass protection on the offensive line to be a more potent offense.

"We made some steps forward but we can get better," said Carroll head coach Jackie Hamilton. "I think we must work on tackling better and lining up right on defense."

With a pair of good running backs in their stable of offensive weapons, Ouachita poses a challenge to the Carroll defensive unit.

"Ouachita has a real good offense and two good running backs," Hamilton said. "We have to work on alignment because if you don't line up right against Ouachita you will be in trouble."
