OPSB schedules hearing, vote on millage rates, budget

The Ouachita Parish School Board is set to consider its $180-million budget for the 2008-09 fiscal year at its meeting Tuesday, Sept. 9.

The upcoming fiscal year budget must be approved by the school board by Sept. 15.

As previously reported by The Ouachita Citizen, the school board will see an increase this fiscal year in fuel and energy costs.

Richie Garrett, business manager for Ouachita Parish Schools, said besides an increase in gas, fuel and utility expenses, the school board plans to spend more on textbooks this fiscal year.

When gas prices began to rise nationally around April, the school system began paying about $25,000 per week for fuel. At this time last year, the school system paid a little more than $15,000 per week for fuel.

Garrett told The Ouachita Citizen he would budget about $25,000 to $28,000 a week for fuel costs for this upcoming fiscal year.

The proposed budget also includes an additional $500,000 over last year for text books. Last year, the school board budgeted $1.6 million for textbooks.

Garrett expects revenue and expenditures will be about the same for the 2008-09 fiscal year. Total expenditures will be close to $180 million, he said.

According to Superintendent Dr. Bob Webber, the parish school system's general fund should have a balance of $17 million-$18 million at the end of the 2008-09 fiscal year.

The school board will begin its budget hearing 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 9.

At 5 p.m., the school board will conduct a millage rate hearing. That will entail a public hearing where the school board will vote on its millage rates for the 2008 tax year.

The school board's regular meeting will begin at 6 p.m. Tuesday. The school board meets at its office located at 100 Bry St. in Monroe.
