The members of the Southern Regional Education Board chose District 34 State Senator Francis Thompson (D-Delhi) to serve as treasurer at the group's annual meeting, the third consecutive time Thompson has been picked for the leadership post.

SREB, the oldest and largest educational compact in the nation, advises state education leaders on ways to improve education.

"I am honored to have the opportunity to continue my leadership role with the Southern Regional Education Board," said Thompson, who has been working with SREB since 1980. "Since SREB's inception back in 1948, it has provided Louisiana and the other 15 member southern states with invaluable research and other assistance to help advance education and improve the social and economic life of the region."

SREB provides policy development assistance on a wide range of issues from early childhood education programs to higher education programs and workforce development matters. The organization also supports the development of minority scholars in cooperation with The Pew Charitable Trusts and the Ford Foundation.

"I was very excited to see our 400th Doctoral Scholars Program graduate, a graduate from Louisiana , recognized at the annual meeting this year," Thompson said. "This program has been very instrumental in providing financial support to deserving minority students seeking doctoral degrees with an eye to returning to the college classroom as professors."

During the annual meeting, Thompson also presided over sessions relating to preparing principals to turn around low-performing schools. Besides Louisiana, SREB member states are Alabama, Arkansas, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Mississippi, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia and West Virginia.
