NSU likes area players

The Northwestern State University Demons have four players from the Ouachita Parish area who will be helping the Demons football team for quite some time to come.

The four include Mario Wiley, a 6-2, 185-lb. sophomore. Wiley was West Monroe's standout wide receiver. Xavier Lee, a 5-9, 175-lb. freshman from Carroll. Matt Currie, a 5-10, 240-lb. freshman fullback from West Ouachita and Matt Dampier.
a 6-0, 235-lb. senior linebacker from West Monroe.

Wiley and Dampier both played on West Monroe's state title team in 2005.

"Mario is going to be a good player here and has a chance to get in the playing rotation right away," said NSU coach Scott Stoker. "He's a big wideout who is mentally ahead of his class because he's got a real good understanding of what we do and he is picking up everything quickly.

Lee is a newcomer from Carroll who goes by the name of "X".

"X has a chance to help us on special teams," Stoker said. He's a hard worker who has gotten better this year. He's catching our attention more and more."
Stoker also liked Currie.

"Matt is a great student-athlete who brings a lot of credit from across campus by handling his academis the way he does," Stoker said. "On the field, he's in a loaded position for us because we have three veteran fullbacks, but it's a position which can never have enough depth. He will help us on special teams."
Stoker was also impressed with Dampier, who returns for his senior season.

"Mack is what every coach wants from a senior," Stoker said. "He's a heck of a football player and a great leader. He understands what we want this team to become and he does everything he can to get us there. He's a tough and durable guy who makes plays all over because he understands the game so well."

Northwestern State opens at home Saturday, Aug. 30 against Texas A&M-Commerce.
