Property tax extension for eastern Ouachita schools passes

A one-year property tax extension to help pay for parish school construction projects in eastern Ouachita was approved by voters Saturday, the Secretary of State's office reported.

With 33 of 33 precincts reporting, some 855 voters, or almost 75 percent, said yes to the property tax extension, while 289 voters, or 25 percent, said no.

Ouachita Parish Schools officials asked voters in the unincorporated areas of eastern Ouachita to approve the extension in light of increased construction costs the school system has encountered as of late. The one-year extension is expected to generate some $9.2 million.

The construction of a new elementary school in Sterlington and a new middle school or junior high school at Richwood should proceed since voters approved the property tax extension. The renovation of existing educational facilities in eastern Ouachita also is planned.

Last year, eastern Ouachita voters in the unincorporated areas of the parish passed a seven-year extension of the same property tax to pay for the Richwood and Sterlington school projects as well as for the renovation projects at existing school facilities. The seven-year extension, according to school officials, did not generate enough money to pay for the projects because construction costs have increased dramatically in the past few years. That led parish school officials to ask voters to tack on another year to the school system's property tax for eastern Ouachita schools.

The property tax is now scheduled to expire in 2034.
