Museum drop-in activity focuses on plants

Biedenharn Gardens & Museum will hold a drop-in activity for children from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday, July 12.

Children will learn about succulents, a type of plant. They'll also choose from a variety of cacti and other desert loving plants, and will feel the unique texture of the soil these plants love.

Local cactus enthusiasts Ralph Calhoun and Lamar Smith will display some of their cactus and succulent collections.

Families are welcome to drop in, and the activity will take between 15-30 minutes to complete.

A $5 fee per child will cover the cost of supplies. Reservations are not required.

"The kids will love the little details we have planned," said Abbey Ebarb, event coordinator.

"They will have the opportunity to personalize their container garden just the way they want it."

When families have finished the activity, they can purchase a 5-cent Coca-Cola, tour the Biedenharn home and stroll through ELsong Gardens.

Then, families can catch a ride on the Monroe City Downtown Trolley. The Saturday route runs every 20 minutes from the museum and visits other downtown attractions.

Other events coming up are Moonlit Gardens: Astronomy Night from 9-11 p.m. Friday, July 18; the second annual Coke Road Show from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 2; children's drop-in activity: Plant Stakes from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 9; and Moonlit Gardens from 9-11 p.m. Friday, Aug. 15.
