Story Archives: Four parish players suiting up at LSU

Four parish players suiting up at LSU
by Joe Durham, Jr. - posted E-mail Story E-mail Story | Print Story Print Story
There are four Ouachita Parish players who will be suiting up for the LSU Tigers this fall. Actually, two of them will quite possibly be redshirted as freshmen Tyler Edwards from Ouachita and Matt Branch from Sterlington are the two redshirt possibilities.

The other two who are from Ouachita Parish are Shomori Clemons and Will Blackwell

Both Clemons and Blackwell are from West Monroe and both played on the Rebels team which won the last state championship.

"Things are going pretty good now," Branch said in a telephone interview Tuesday. "We get up and are at the football weight room by 7 a.m., then we go to classes. After lunch we go to the study hall for about two hours, then we have more football in the afternoon."

Branch says he is studying BIology now.

"The situation is really crazy down here now," Branch said. "People here are hopeful they'll repeat as national champions."

Branch says he doesn't get to talk to LSU head coach Les Miles much. The only coach he sees is the weight-room coach.

Branch was a top tight end at Sterlington, and Edwards is listed as 6-3, 240 lb. tight end., who are both roommates at LSU.

The Tigers are just coming off one of their best seasons ever, winning the national championship, and are looking for more of the same.

Branch, 6-5, 220 lbs. had 29 catches last season for 277 yards and one touchdown. Playing both ways, Branch had six tackles, two deflections and two hurries on defense.

Branch said having Edwards as a roommate is nice.

"We get along well together," Branch said. "We're on the same team now and we're good friends."

Branch says he also sees Clemons and Blackwell at the football workouts.
Clemons, 6-5, 220 lbs. and Blackwell, 6-4, 293 lbs. were on the West Monroe team which won the state championship in 2005. Blackwell is listed as a defensive end while Clemons is a 6-2, 220 lb., linebacker.

LSU opens at home Saturday, August 30 against division II power Appalachian State, the same team who surprised MIchigan State in the season opener last year.
