Carroll needs room for improvement
The Carroll Bulldogs got off to a slow start in 2007 and never recovered. By the time they won their only game of the season, they were already 0-8.
This season, though, the Bulldogs are hoping to get off to a better start. But the Bulldogs have a formidable foe in the season opener when they host Ouachita.
It doesn't get any easier as they have their next four games on the road, including return matches at Wossman, Sulphur, Richwood and B.T. Washington before coming home to host Neville at the start of District 2-4A play.
One of the Bulldogs main defensive players was injured.
Last season things could have been a little bit better as they only got beat by one point against arch-rival Wossman who won 19-18. Sulphur, the team who knocked West Monroe out of the playoffs in 2006, rambled past Carroll by a 55-6 margin and the other arch-rival game against Richwood was a 36-20 blow.
The district, ranked as one of the toughest 4A districts in the state, didn't go any better last season.
Carroll is using the summer to get better through the weight program. They have weight-lifting and agility drills all summer up until the Aug. 11 practice start date.
"We ought to be better this year," said Carroll coach Jackie Hamilton. "We had a series of setbacks last year. We'll have our defensive end Darius Domrey back. He was hurt last season, but he's back. We'll be much, much faster. We'll be young, but we have experience. We'll have more depth. We've picked up some team leaders."
The Bulldogs get a break from district action when they take on Southwood in the middle of the district part of the schedule. Southwood was a 27-6 winner last season.
"We have a tough schedule," Hamilton said. "We know what it takes now to get a w instead of an l."
