33 ULM athletes graduate

A total of 33 current and former University of Louisiana-Monroe athletes saw their academic efforts rewarded over the weekend after accepting their diplomas in the 2008 Spring Commencement proceedings at Fant-Ewing Coliseum over the weekend.

"We are very proud of our graduates, especially those who did so with honors," ULM Director of Athletics Bobby Staub said. "Success on the field and court is second to success in the classroom. It is primary in our mission to guide these young men and women through their time at ULM to the outcome of a college degree."

A total of 20 current student athletes from eight different sports were bestowed with their ULM degrees. Darius Battles, Matt Freeman, Brent Gregston, Kendall Mouton, Quintez Secka, Patrick Sturgeon, Brandon Strope, Rani Giladi, Matt Brophy, Amanda Bartlett, Giovanna Arrondo, Noelia Leon, Cristen Aldredge, Shannon Lloyd, Calli Baker, Courtney Cleveland, and Lindsay Rittenhouse joined baseball players D.J. Fortenberry, Jared Jennings and A.J. Siggers in receiving their degrees.

Strope, a member of the 2008 Spring Dean's List and Warhawk golf team, graduated Magna Cum Laude in marketing.

The tennis team's Arrondo graduated Cum Laude in both management and entrepreneurship while the women's basketball team's Aldredge graduated Cum Laude in kinesiology.

For the track and field team, Bartlett graduated Cum Laude in chemistry and Giladi graduated Cum Laude in accounting.

A total of three current athletes earned Dean's List honors and another three earned President's List accolades.

In addition to ULM's active student athletes, 13 former Warhawk stars continued their academic progress and earned their degrees. Travis Drader, Josh Morrison, James Stephens, Chris Freeman, Joseph Joseph, Joseph Merritt, Kevin Payne, Aaron Branch, Darci Mika, Alicia Pantallion, Nina Randle, Melanie Williams, and V.J. Smith all graduated after exhausting their athletic eligibility.

Fortenberry, Jennings and Siggers are still competing and will travel with the regular season championship ULM baseball team to Lafayette, La. on Wednesday for the opening round of the Sun Belt Conference Tournament against Middle Tennessee at 4 p.m.
