New LSU basketball coach visits Monroe

LSU's new men's basketball coach Trent Johnson recently made his first appearance in Monroe after taking the reigns from John Brady, who was released from his duties this past spring.

Johnson, who has worked in the Pac 10 and the WAC, will get his first look at the Southeastern Conference this fall.

"There is a lot of talent here," Johnson said. "And there is a lot of talent in the state. Recruiting in this state is awfully important. This is our primary goal, to get players from the state who will stay in the state to attend school. I've never been in a situation before where I have such a broad range of players to choose from."

Johnson said he would start early with going back to the basics of basketball.

The SEC is extremely dominant in their play," Johnson said. "They play the game the way it is supposed to be played. We want to stress the fundamentals. We want to have preparation to be able to face anybody."

One thing Johnson likes about the Southeastern Conference is the schedule.

"I like to be able to play on Monday and then not again until Saturday," he said.

Johnson was the head coach at Stanford University before coming to LSU. Before then he was at Nevada. He is very familiar with post-season play and was named Coach of the Year for both the WAC and the Pac-10. This past season, Johnson's team advanced to the NCAA Sweet 16, earning a No. 3 seed in the NCAA tournament.

"This is not my first rodeo," Johnson said about the LSU job.

The Tigers will have a stiff non-conference slate to work with, including Washington State, California State-Fullerton, Utah and Texas A&M, Johnson said.
