Cadet academy for youth scheduled Area youth interested in law enforcement have the chance to learn the ins and outs of the business in an upcoming cadet academy at the North Delta Basic Police Academy in West Monroe.
Local law enforcement agencies will offer two summer sessions for area youth. The first session will be held June 2-5. The second academy will be held June 16-20.
Classes will be held Monday through Friday with lunch and snacks provided during the day.
The academy has been held for the past two summers for youth ages 12 to 15. Cost is $35 per student.
The academy is being offered once again this summer by the Ouachita Parish Sheriff's Office, and the West Monroe and Monroe police departments.
Marky Tucker of the Ouachita Parish Sheriff's Office said that each cadet must be recommended by a school administrator and approved by his or her parents.
"We take our profession very seriously, and we want to make sure that cadets gain the most they can from this opportunity," Tucker said.
Last summer, the academy graduated 70 cadets.
The 2008 summer program will provide youth the chance to learn the rewards of community involvement and give them a better understanding of citizenship, Tucker said.
Cadets also will learn what it takes to be a law enforcement officer as they find out about the SWAT team, K-9 unit, special street crimes unit, laws of arrest, search and seizure, crime scene investigation, weapon safety, patrol, traffic accident investigation and the criminal justice system. Cadets also will participate in hands-on activities such as lifting fingerprints, operating traffic radar and field sobriety tests.
Last year, the crime scene investigation and fingerprinting activity were both big hits with local cadets. Most of the cadets who participated in last year's academy already had an interest in police work, and the facilitators of the academy all said they hoped that some of the teens would be encouraged to pursue a career in law enforcement.
Academy instructors say teens who are interested in pursuing a career in law enforcement, the cadet academy would give them a good idea of what police work is all about.
