OPPJ amends ordinance aimed at overgrown grass The Ouachita Parish Police Jury agreed to strengthen its current ordinance to regulate overgrown grass and weeds in residential areas outside recognized subdivisions. The police jury first entertained an ordinance governing overgrown grass about two months ago.
A public hearing was held Monday during the police jury's regular meeting. The only citizen to address the jury concerning the matter was James Poe, a member of the Keep Ouachita Parish Beautiful board.
"I think this (grass ordinance) will greatly help our neighborhoods, especially my neighborhood," Poe said. "I really think it will help a lot."
The ordinance was officially adopted later in the meeting by a unanimous vote.
The amended ordinance states that "owners of any lot located in a recognized subdivision or any parcel located in a clearly established residential area on a state highway or a parish road outside municipalities within the parish shall cut all grass and obnoxious weeds."
The ordinance only applies to unincorporated areas of the parish.
Residents who fail to cut their overgrown grass and weeds will be sent a letter requiring the property owner to comply. If the landowner does not cut his or her grass and weeds within 15 days of receiving the letter, the police jury will have the property mowed and charge the landowner for the work.
The effective date of the amended ordinance was May 20, 2008. |
